> Academic Enhancements and Supports
Senior School
Every learner is unique. Sometimes, students crave an extra challenge to keep them engaged and energized. At other times, they might need focussed time outside the classroom to navigate especially complex material or to sharpen their skills in areas that need work. An enriching environment and on-site specialists help students to thrive and to stay on track to achieving their full potential.
Advanced Placement Program
Offered by the U.S. based College Board of New Jersey, Advanced Placement courses taught at SJR allow students the opportunity to earn credit or standing for university level courses at most Canadian and American universities. Learn more here.
Independent Study Option
Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth offers a range of independent study option courses to complement the student’s SJR curriculum. These courses are offered by correspondence.
University Preparedness
Senior School students receive guidance on course selection and its implications for university admissions as well as information on applying to post-secondary and scholarship programs. Learn more here.
Additional services, open to both Middle and Senior School students, are listed below:
Advisory Program
Each student is assigned to an advisor who acts as a mentor and guide through these important years, focusing character education.
Study Skills
Students learn time management along with organizational and study skills. Exam preparation workshops are also offered.
Accelerated Mathematics
Students who excel at math may be admitted to an advanced stream. Senior School Pre-Calculus begins in Grade and finishes in Grade 11. In Grade 12, students enrol in two University of Manitoba 3 credit-hour courses: Linear Algebra and Calculus.
Music
A variety of supports and enhancements are available to music students. Enrichment is offered through the Private Music Lesson program. Those students who require coaching for auditions can work directly with individual teachers, while group assistance is offered through instrumental clinicians. Students can also receive extra support with any need in their music instruction either on an individual or small-group basis.
Learning Style Assessment
Students complete a learning style inventory to determine how they learn best. They can then tailor their study approaches to meet their individual needs. Teachers will also be able to make adaptations to suit individual student’s needs.
Math and Reading Assessments
SJR’s Learning Support Specialist provides key math assessments as well as assessments of reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Math Centre
Available four mornings and four afternoons each week, the Math Centre offers support to students in need of extra help.
Study Hall
Middle School students have the option to work in a quiet, supervised environment for 75 minutes after school to complete assignments and receive extra help. Supervised study time is also available for boarders in Grades 8 – 10 and in some cases in Grades 11 and 12.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
For those students whose first language is not English, support is provided by the EAL teacher. Available to both day and boarding students, this service helps students enhance their English skills and offers the opportunity for one-on-one help.
Learning Support
In-class support or pull-out for individuals or small groups of students who require extra assistance.
