Discovery Day in Health Sciences

‘It’s Possible’ is the theme of this year’s Career Month, celebrated in November across Canada. At St. John’s-Ravenscourt School, while career-counselling is ongoing, we are participating in Career Month with a variety of student events coordinated by our counsellors.

On Friday, November 5, 2021, seven SJR Senior School students attended the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame’s Discovery Day in Health Sciences at University of Manitoba virtual event. This event aims to help students gain a clearer picture of what it would be like to be a health professional by interacting with researchers, clinicians and educators through workshops, lectures and panel discussions. Our students have shared the following reflections:

"This was my first year at Discovery Day and although it was virtual, it was a memorable experience, giving me the chance to listen to the stories and experiences of professionals and connect with fellow students passionate about the health sciences. One of the most memorable parts of this event was listening to Dr. Penner's story of her journey that got her to where she is today as it was incredibly touching and inspiring. The workshop and exhibits were also very engaging and informative, giving me the chance to have my questions answered. As a Grade 12 student, I'm incredibly grateful for this event as the insight I received left me feeling prepared to step into the world of health sciences next year in university."
- Vicky (Grade 12)

“I thoroughly enjoyed my experience attending the Discovery Day event. It was truly inspiring to hear from many speakers about their experiences in the field of health sciences and how they overcame many obstacles to get where they are today. I also loved how there was the option to learn more about psychiatry, the specific field of medicine that I am interested in, as the information I have gained further encourages me to pursue this field in the future. I am grateful for the opportunity to attend this event and hope to be able to attend again in the future.”
- Wisdom (Grade 10)

Discovery Day was an amazing opportunity (thank you Dr. Blahy!). The big take away for me is that there are ways to pursue a career in the medical sciences other than becoming a practicing physician. I think that the joy the presenters obviously had was a big inspiration for me because they had obviously found their passion in life! Another big plus for me is how they showed they were able to balance work and life. Again, thank you so much for the invaluable information from Discovery Days!”
- Hope (Grade 12)

The next Career Month event at SJR will be on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, in collaboration with the SJR Alumni Association. The Commerce Committee (club) will be hosting a virtual alumni panel with business professionals. We look forward to our students connecting with alumni and learning from their career journeys.

Back
St. John’s-Ravenscourt School was founded in 1820 principally to serve the children of the Selkirk settlers. By 1834 there were forty students, evenly split between boys and girls. SJR has inevitably grown and changed over the years since, though its success throughout has been unimpeachable. We have graduated 18 Rhodes scholars, for example, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II granted patronage and established a scholarship in her name in 1981. Today the programs are as strong as our reputation. A strong academic program is paired with an equally strong attention to the values of stewardship, ethical leadership, and excellence in all areas of academic, social and athletic life.
