About Junior School

The first years of school are some of the most important for your child. At SJR, we recognize the breathtaking capacity for learning that exists in young children and the crucial role played by their teacher in harnessing that potential. 

Our teachers dedicate themselves to ensuring each student reaches their fullest potential and to instilling them with a love of learning – all within the nurturing, safe, fun environment of Junior School. Our structured and caring classroom environment provides a happy, energetic space for students’ young minds to flourish. We are committed to building the foundations that will take our students into Middle School and beyond, helping them to become life-long learners and compassionate global citizens – today and tomorrow.

  • Curriculum

    The Junior School’s enriching curriculum lays the building blocks for all that is yet to come for our students. From English Language Arts, Mathematics and French to Visual Arts and Social Studies, our students experience an exciting range of learning opportunities and challenges, whatever their individual strengths and abilities. 

    We know that every learner is unique – guidance and mentoring is always on hand from our established Learning and Language Support Programs.
  • Co-Curricular

    We encourage all students to get involved with our diverse co-curricular program and discover their interests. Whether it’s taking part in Athletics or Hockey (beginning in Kindergarten), joining the Virtual Science Fair or Spelling Bee, or participating in the Winnipeg Music Festival as part of the Junior School Choir, there really is something for everyone!

    Our Philanthropy Program is also a priority for our students, who have developed an impressive reputation for getting involved in age-appropriate and meaningful ways. From the Terry Fox Run to visiting local senior residences and supporting The Children’s Hospital Foundation, our students embrace their social responsibility. Philanthropy begins in Junior School!
  • Our Beliefs

    All people have worth and are deserving of respect.
    The pursuit of excellence is a habit worth the cost.
    Language development and knowledge of numbers are the essential building blocks of a Junior School education. Strong programs in science, social science, French, physical education and the creative arts must support them.
    A structured, safe environment promotes confidence, risk-taking and learning.

Our Approach

Teachers in Junior School have been inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood education, which encourages educators to design experiences that lead children to wonder, discover and learn. Validating children’s work and encouraging the child to go deeper into his/her thinking and perception of the world is the most important part of the process.

SJR is proud to be accredited and affiliated with several local, national and international educational organizations.
St. John’s-Ravenscourt School was founded in 1820 principally to serve the children of the Selkirk settlers. By 1834 there were forty students, evenly split between boys and girls. SJR has inevitably grown and changed over the years since, though its success throughout has been unimpeachable. We have graduated 18 Rhodes scholars, for example, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II granted patronage and established a scholarship in her name in 1981. Today the programs are as strong as our reputation. A strong academic program is paired with an equally strong attention to the values of stewardship, ethical leadership, and excellence in all areas of academic, social and athletic life.
