In a week tinged with deep sadness, we wore green and gold, donned sports jerseys and left hockey sticks out to pay our respects and show our support for the Humboldt Broncos. In honour of those affected by the tragic accident and their passion for sport, I also wanted to highlight and acknowledge the recent achievements of our sports teams.
Mr. Wright reports on a successful winter term with SJR teams travelling to various places around Manitoba and Canada.
“In January, our Minor Peewee hockey team enjoyed the annual trek to Montreal to attend the Lower Canada College tournament. While playing in LCC's beautiful arena was a thrill, having the opportunity to tour much of Montreal's sites was also exciting. Following the trip, it was evident that the SJR Minor Peewee team was playing their best hockey of the season, beating several of the teams above them in standings. Despite a short playoff run, these athletes played with a great deal of heart throughout the season. Congratulations to our Grade 6 players and coaches.
The High School hockey season ended in early March. The Boys played some of their best hockey at the end of the regular season, beating some of the strongest teams in their last few games. The Girls finished a very impressive season in second place, just one point behind the first-place team. Sadly, the playoff run ended in the first round for the Boys. The Girls reached the semi-final round before being eliminated, which is an outstanding achievement.
Our 5/6 Timbits teams finished their season in early March. Having played over 20 games and more than 35 practices throughout the season, it is evident that our youngest hockey players have shown a good deal of development. Last month SJR hosted a Friendship Tournament for all 7/8 Novice teams from the Fort Garry North Hockey Association. It was a great way for our Novice teams to end their long hockey season. Congratulations to all our House League hockey players and a special thank you goes to our coaches, managers and safety officers for the time and effort they put into the SJR Hockey Program.
The U13 Boys basketball team enjoyed the sights of Toronto while attending the CAIS tournament in early February. Both Middle Schools team represented SJR with respect and pride while playing in their respective tournaments. The High School basketball teams travelled to several locations in Manitoba throughout the season including Beausejour, Brandon, Lorette, Steinbach, Ste. Anne and The Pas.
Several of our student-athletes competed in the Indoor Track and Field meets held at the University of Manitoba. All competed well on the track and in the field events, including a silver medal from Martin (Grade 9) in JV Boys shot put. Some of our athletes were competing for the first time - a great learning experience.
Basketball took centre stage in both Richardson Gym and Reimer Gym, with eight teams competing and two clubs meeting on a weekly basis. All had impressive seasons with several plaques brought home from tournaments. It was nice to see the development that took place as the season progressed. By the end of the season, our three Middle School teams earned four plaques at tournaments and the U14 Boys-8 team took first place in the PTAA Division Championships, their second in two years. Not to be outdone, our High School teams earned just as many plaques. The Varsity Girls were finalists in the SCAC Conference finals, as were the JV Boys. Varsity Boys won the SCAC Championship and placed 6th overall at the Provincial Championship.
High School Indoor Soccer continued throughout the winter, with our Girls’ team advancing to the B-side semi-finals and the Boys winning the B-side Championship.
In the span of two weeks, our Indoor Soccer teams and basketball teams earned five banners to be hung on the wall in Reimer Gym.
To add to the team successes, SJR student-athletes were selected as Provincial Graduating All-stars in Women's hockey, Men's hockey and Varsity Boys’ basketball.
Despite the snow still on the fields, the spring season has begun. Rugby, Ultimate, Soccer, and Track and Field teams have been formed and they are all enjoying their early season practices.”
Congratulations to all our athletes for the effort and determination they put into the sports they play and for modelling active healthy living. Thank you to all the coaches and parents for their guidance and constant support.
SJR stands together with the Humboldt community. Please remember that the School’s counsellors are available to meet with any students who want to talk to someone or need support.
