Sport teaches us about being human

As well as the obvious health and fitness benefits, sport teaches us about being human. Learning to win and lose, to lead and be part of a team, and to go all out and acknowledge defeat are essential life skills. Our team of dedicated and passionate specialist teachers and coaches are on hand to provide high-quality guidance, helping each student fulfil their potential.

As always, much has happened in the Athletics program throughout the fall season. Mr. Wright, Director of Athletics, has highlighted the following achievements.

The 25th anniversary of Hold Back the Snow took place at the WSEU Soccer fields. This year’s Ultimate tournament saw 38 teams comprising more than 700 athletes and 80 coaches from North America braving 70 km winds, snow, sleet and rain on the Saturday with the weather improving slightly to two degrees on the Sunday! Congratulations go to the coaches and players of SJR Green who won the Middle School Division and have their team name engraved on the coveted Hold Back the Snow plaque, which is currently proudly displayed in the Middle School trophy case. Our thanks go to the army of volunteer parents who worked so hard to make this event successful.

SJR was well represented by our travelling teams in October, with the Varsity Girls volleyball team travelling to the Western Championship in Vancouver, and the U13 Boys and Senior Boys Soccer teams playing in their respective CAIS tournaments.

The Cross-Country season was a success with students performing well at the Pembina Trails meets and Junior Varsity Girls Zone Championship. Three of our JV boys represented the School at the Provincial Championship in Roseisle, MB.

The High School volleyball season ended with both JV and Varsity losing their playoff games. Player and team development were key with a great deal of progress taking place throughout the season. The U14 Girls (Grade 7/8) volleyball team finished their season having played four mini-tournaments. Since development was the main ingredient to this season, the league does not maintain results from each event. However, the players and team showed significant growth on the volleyball court.

Our girls’ and boys’ indoor soccer teams have taken to the field, playing in the Winnipeg High School league. They will continue playing until the end of the winter term.

All hockey teams from Kindergarten to High School are fully immersed into their league play. It is always a treat to watch the Timbits teams practising, and then see where these young athletes will be in a few years as I watch our Varsity teams take the ice.

Mr. Riley Dudar, our Head of Hockey Operations, hosted a fantastic festival for Fort Garry North House League hockey teams on Saturday, November 24. Positive comments have been passed on from coaches and parents. Well done, Mr. Dudar! Special thanks also go to SJR leadership students for running activities in Reimer Gym, the weekend kitchen staff for providing lunch for dozens of young hockey players and their coaches, and our maintenance crew for assisting in set up and take down.

Basketball tryouts in both Middle and Senior School are well underway. Good luck to all our athletes.

Along with their regular academic and co-curricular commitments, the students are eagerly preparing for upcoming events. I look forward to seeing many of you at our concerts and the Senior School Major Production.
