Having coached soccer for over 25 years, I experienced a first on Monday afternoon. I was lucky enough to stand on the bench with the SJR Coaches’ team when they took on our Varsity Boys’ Hockey team in an exhibition game. It was fantastic to see a group of skilful and experienced coaches deliver a hockey masterclass. I am sure our students will remember the learning experience for a long time. The spirit in which the game was played was impeccable, and the enthusiastic crowds of younger hockey players witnessed a real treat. I will not reveal the final score, but I will say that the coaches won comfortably and that my presence on the bench had absolutely no impact on the result!
The game was a precursor to our annual Hockey Skills Competition where SJR hockey players from a variety of ages were put through their paces. Student teams competed in different areas including hardest shot, most accurate shot, dangle/agility course, breakaway challenge, and team relay. The sense of community and excitement was profound. It was great to see Dutton Arena packed all night long with such strong support from everyone involved. My thanks go to Evolution Hockey for organizing such a special event and our volunteer coaches for everything they did.
Our U14 basketball teams both finished runners-up in local tournaments last weekend. In the Manitoba High School Athletic Association Power Rankings, the Junior Varsity AAA Girls’ basketball team is ranked 5th and the Junior Varsity AAA Boys’ and Varsity Girls’ basketball teams are ranked 7th in the standings. Our track and field teams have done well in both High School and Middle School indoor meets, including several top five results in various events. Our Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ indoor soccer teams are just completing their playoff seasons and the Boys just need a few more wins to qualify for the championship game. We teach our students the importance of a healthy mind and body and encourage them to develop strategies to improve and maintain an active lifestyle. Good luck to all our teams (and their loyal supporters) in the playoffs.
The SJRPA calendar has been busy of late. I want to thank our hard-working volunteers for the “Fuelling our Children for Success” panel discussion, WinterFest, yesterday's Pizza Lunch, and the Junior School Book Fair. School is richer for these events.
The parking lot in front of the main entrance can be busy at certain times of the day, and it is imperative that we use it sensibly and safely. As a community, we need to take care of one another and understand that the accessible parking bays in front of the Riley Fitness Centre are there for people who require them. Please only use these bays if you have the appropriate permit.
Mark your calendars for Rock Show, which this year will take place at The Met on the evening of Sunday, March 15, 2020. There aren’t many schools whose students perform at an actual live rock show….
SJR is proud to be accredited and affiliated with several local, national and international educational organizations.
St. John’s-Ravenscourt School was founded in 1820 principally to serve the children of the Selkirk settlers. By 1834 there were forty students, evenly split between boys and girls. SJR has inevitably grown and changed over the years since, though its success throughout has been unimpeachable. Today the programs are as strong as our reputation. A strong academic program is paired with an equally strong attention to the values of stewardship, ethical leadership, and excellence in all areas of academic, social and athletic life.
