Picture Peace Photo Contest

We are pleased to announce that the 2023 United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) club members Xiwen, Harneek and Lauren (Grade 12) were named the overall winners of the highly regarded Picture Peace Photo Contest. They received first and fourth place with their excellent submissions, demonstrating their talent and creativity.
They received accolades from the Canadian Commission for UNESCO judges, who praised the winning submissions.
"Artistically speaking, we loved this image the best!", said one of the judges about the first-place photo.
They also described the fourth-place photo as “very profound.”
Each winning photo received a $250 prize to be donated to a charity of their choice, bringing the overall amount to $500 for the two winning photographs. Aligning with the contest's theme of giving back, the SJR students have chosen United Way Winnipeg to receive the donation.

When deciding where to donate the prize money, we knew that we wanted to choose a local organization that reflected the values of UNESCO, so we chose United Way Winnipeg," said Lauren, "United Way Winnipeg works with a plethora of organizations to help deal with issues in Winnipeg, including the unsheltered persons' crisis, empowering youth and helping to build a stronger community."
St. John’s-Ravenscourt School was founded in 1820 principally to serve the children of the Selkirk settlers. By 1834 there were forty students, evenly split between boys and girls. SJR has inevitably grown and changed over the years since, though its success throughout has been unimpeachable. We have graduated 18 Rhodes scholars, for example, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II granted patronage and established a scholarship in her name in 1981. Today the programs are as strong as our reputation. A strong academic program is paired with an equally strong attention to the values of stewardship, ethical leadership, and excellence in all areas of academic, social and athletic life.
